From journalism ➡️ content design

I’ve always loved words, storytelling and asking questions, so moving from journalism to content design felt natural. I try to stay rooted in my journalism background as I encounter problems and find their solutions. Some J-School skills that still help me today:

  • Curiosity makes for good content

  • Working with limited space

  • Simplifying the complex

  • Writing for humans

My approach to content design

Content strategy design and strategy requires a broad base of skills, but I try to keep three principles in mind as I design content each day:

  • Empathy for the user. How can I help a user solve their problem? I try to think “when I ____, I want to ____ so I can ______. “

  • Storytelling is powerful. On top of having a good story to spin, the way you tell it matters. Tone and voice and finding the right medium can have a big impact.

  • Don’t guess. Gut instinct can be valuable but knowing how to define success is crucial, as well as how to get better through testing and iteration.
